ORIENTAL CARPET DESIGN
The design of a work of art
is influenced by many factors, economic, sociological,
political, as well as cultural. This is never more true
than in the Islamic world which is a complex blend of
cultures and races, extending from Morocco to China,
over which Islam is the dominant but by no means the
exclusive religion. Carpets are highly regarded by all
the peoples of the orient and so have been woven by
Arabs, Persians, Turks, and Greeks; Christians, Jews,
and Muslims. Whereas the majority of rugs display motifs
relating to Islamic culture and religious symbolism,
some show those of the minorities in these regions.
